DETROIT -- Xander Bogaerts, who turned 21 on Oct. 1, will become the youngest player ever to start a postseason game for the Red Sox when he takes the field for Game 5 of the ALCS Thursday night.

Bogaerts is 21 years and 16 days old. Babe Ruth was 21 years and 246 days when he started for the Red Sox in the 1916 World Series.

Two 19-year-olds played in the postseason last year, Manny Machado of the Orioles and Bryce Harper of the Nationals. Machado was 3 for 19 (.158), Harper 3 for 23 (.130).
