Ortiz: 'Never seen a ball hit harder'

DETROIT -- David Ortiz walked into a Red Sox clubhouse packed with TV cameras, notepads and boom mikes, and went up to Peter Gammons, the legendary Boston baseball writer.

"How long have you covered baseball?" Ortiz asked of Gammons, who began his career with the Boston Globe in 1968. "Forty years? More?

"Have you ever seen anyone hit a ball harder than Napoli did tonight? In this weather?"

Gammons shook his head.

Maybe you, an eavesdropper suggested to Ortiz.

He shook his head. "Never," he said.

Napoli’s second-inning home run to dead center field was measured at 460 feet, according to ESPN Stats & Information.
