BOSTON -- David Waldstein of the New York Times dropped this one on us a couple of days ago: Before the season, Sox closer Koji Uehara, who used to wear a beard before it became fashionable to do so in Boston, went on “Best Sports,” a TV show on the NHK network in Japan, and had it shaved off.

“I just didn’t know where I was going with that beard,” Uehara told Waldstein through interpreter C.J. Matsumoto. “So I thought it was best to shave it off. It was a good time to do it, and I think many people were happy. They said I looked younger.”
