In his video blog Tuesday (posted above), ESPN MLB Insider Buster Olney discussed free-agent catcher Brian McCann and a possible fit for the Red Sox, who chose not to extend a one-year, $14.1 million qualifying offer to Jarrod Saltalamacchia.
Olney points to Rangers and Yankees as most likely landing spots for McCann, but considers the Red Sox are a sleeper team.
A good fit, timing-wise, considering they will have money to spend (assuming they don’t sign Jacoby Ellsbury) and for another reason as well:
"Besides the immediate need at catcher, down the road McCann would be an excellent fit as a designated hitter for the Red Sox after David Ortiz moves on," Olney notes.
He also points out that the Sox have a great recruiter in David Ross, who played with McCann in Atlanta.
McCann is listed on Keith Law’s Top 50 free agents at No. 8, with Saltalamacchia 12th. Interestingly, Saltalamacchia (2.9) actually had the better WAR than McCann (2.2) in 2013.
