Following a leadoff walk to Brett Gardner, Red Sox starter Felix Doubront got Brian Roberts to ground to third base for a possible double play. Brock Holt threw the ball to Pedroia, who tagged second base before losing the ball as Gardner slid in. As a result of the new rule, Gardner was called safe at second and Pedroia was given an error on the play. The Yankees went on to score three runs in the inning.
"I don't like the transfer rule. I'm a middle infielder so I know it's tough," Pedroia said. "You've got a guy sliding at you and you can't see him; you're trying to get rid of the ball quick. It's 30 degrees, sometimes you lose it. I'm not a big fan of that rule, but I don't make the rules."
