Sox promote Deven Marrero to Pawtucket

7/2/2014

BOSTON -- The Red Sox promoted 2012 first-round pick Deven Marrero to Triple-A Pawtucket Wednesday afternoon.

Marrero, ranked as the team's eighth-best prospect by SoxProspects.com, has put together a strong season at the plate for Double-A Portland this year. The 23-year-old shortstop hit .291 in 68 games with the Sea Dogs along with five home runs and 12 stolen bases.

However, Marrero's greatest strength is his defensive play, highlighted by a strong arm and great instincts at short. Red Sox manager John Farrell praised Marrero's defense, describing it as major league-ready.

"A polished college defender," Farrell said of Marrero. "The development needs were still on the offensive side and clearly that's taken place through the first half of the season in Portland."

Marrero played in 13 games for the Red Sox this spring, going 7-for-21 with a home run and an RBI. He was named the organization's Minor League Baserunner of the Year in 2013 after swiping 27 bags while being caught twice.
