The rundown on right-hander Kelly

7/31/2014

BOSTON -- While the Red Sox’s starting rotation has been depleted with the trades of Jon Lester to Oakland and John Lackey to St. Louis, Boston did acquire right-hander Joe Kelly from the Cardinals.

Kelly, 26, started Game 3 of the 2013 World Series against the Red Sox at Busch Stadium, and had to settle for a no-decision in a 5-4 Cardinals win. He worked 5 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on two hits, with three walks and six strikeouts.

Kelly, who has a 3.25 ERA in 38 career starts, pitched Wednesday for St. Louis against the Padres in San Diego -- a 12-1 Cardinals loss. He worked five innings and allowed four runs on seven hits, with one walk and five strikeouts.

It was his seventh start of the season, and fourth since coming off the disabled list. He suffered a left hamstring strain during a start on April 16, while running to first base against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Last season, the Cardinals won nine of Kelly’s last 11 starts, and 12 of 15 overall. The right-hander posted a 10-3 record, with a 2.69 in 37 games (15 starts). Also, he allowed two runs or less in 11 of his 15 starts in 2013.

Kelly is earning $523,000 this season.
