Pedroia leaves game with foot soreness

BOSTON -- Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia was removed from Friday’s 5-3, extra-inning loss to the Houston Astros with soreness in his right foot.

During his second at-bat of the game in the third inning, Pedroia fouled a 1-1 pitch off his right foot and was clearly in some discomfort. He remained in the game and struck out to end the inning.

After Pedroia grounded out to shortstop to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning, it was evident he was in some pain while running down the line, so Red Sox manager John Farrell replaced Pedroia with Kelly Johnson for the top of the ninth inning.

“Obviously he’s sore,” Farrell said. “We’ll check him in the morning when he reports tomorrow to see if he’s available. He’s a little bit sore after tonight.”

Pedroia has played 118 of the 121 games this season and has a .282 average with five home runs and 45 RBIs.
