ANAHEIM -- Sure, Jon Lester said, he thought he might start Tuesday night’s All-Star Game for the American League team instead of Tampa Bay’s David Price.

“Yeah, I mean people kept asking me, ‘Hey, are you going to start? I hope you’re going to start,’ ’’ Lester said. “I just want to pitch. I don’t care. I’ve said that as I was coming up through the Red Sox and made the playoff roster as a reliever. I don’t care. I just want to pitch. Give me the ball. Let me pitch.

“Would it have been nice? Yeah, I definitely would have been honored and tried to go out there and do well. David deserves it. He’s had a great year. I don’t think you could pick anybody better than what he’s doing this year.’’

But no, he said, he didn’t think he needed his first All-Star selection as a validation of what he has achieved.

“I mean, I know my teammates know, guys around the league know,’’ he said. “I don’t think you need this as a stamp or label to validate it. I think you face enough guys, you know who the tough guys are in the league. I know who the tough hitters are.

“You look down the line, you see guys who should be on the All-Star team and didn’t make it for whatever [reason]. Youks (Kevin Youkilis) is a great example, he should be here. You know who the guys are.

“But it’s nice to be here, it’s fun to be here. I’m having a great time meeting some guys I played against. It’s definitely something I’ll remember awhile.’’
