OAKLAND, Calif. –- In preparation for his first start since going on the disabled list with a lower-back strain on May 19, Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett tossed a bullpen session Tuesday afternoon at Oakland-Alameda Coliseum.

The right-hander (1-1, 7.29 ERA) will start against the Mariners on Friday in Seattle. Red Sox manager Terry Francona said Beckett came out of the session in good shape and was able to work on his offspeed pitches, especially his curveball.

“He’s all set for Friday,” Francona said.

Beckett will not be limited by a pitch count, but he will be watched closely. He suffered the back injury when he slipped on a wet mound May 18 in New York.

“We’ll keep an eye on him,” Francona said. “I don’t think it’s so much his arm or his back, I don’t think the stamina would be there because he hasn’t pitched, but we’ll keep an eye on him.”
