OAKLAND, Calif. –- The Red Sox will get two major cogs back in their starting rotation this week when right-handers Clay Buchholz and Josh Beckett return from the disabled list.
Buchholz, who has been on the DL since suffering a left hamstring strain while running the bases during interleague play on June 26 in San Francisco, will be activated and start against the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday afternoon at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.
Buchholz, a first-time All-Star this season, is 10-4 with a 2.45 ERA in 15 starts for the Red Sox. He made one rehab start for Triple-A Pawtucket last Friday and allowed two runs on four hits with one walk, one strikeout and one home run against the Syracuse Chiefs. He threw 60 pitches (33 strikes).
“I feel good,” Buchholz said. “I felt pretty good throwing the other day in Syracuse for Pawtucket. There was a little bit of rust to shake off, but other than that my body felt fine and I didn’t feel anything with the leg. I threw another bullpen [Monday] and everything felt good. I’m ready to go.”
Red Sox manager Terry Francona said Buchholz will not be on a pitch count, but will be watched closely.
“You’ll be able to tell. If he’s tired and he’s coming out of his delivery, it won’t matter what inning he’s in,” Francona said. “If he’s staying in his delivery and he’s fine, then he’ll be OK.”
Beckett, on the DL since May 19 with a lower-back strain, tossed a bullpen session here Tuesday afternoon in preparation for his start against the Mariners on Friday in Seattle.
