ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury began a rehab assignment Monday in Fort Myers, Fla., which means it’s not out of the question that he could be in Pawtucket by the weekend.

Thus, it should be noted that it’s purely coincidental that this Saturday night at McCoy Stadium will be Jacoby Ellsbury “Bobblehead Night.” PawSox PR man Bill Wanless said the decision to honor Ellsbury in a fashion similar to other Sox stars such as Dustin Pedroia, Jon Lester and Kevin Youkilis was made last fall. As part of the agreement, the club will make a donation to a charity of Ellsbury’s choice.

There are tickets remaining for the game, which is scheduled to begin at 6:05 p.m. The first 4,000 fans 14 and under will receive the bobblehead. Wanless said Pawtucket is already debating whether it will honor Clay Buchholz or Daniel Bard with a bobblehead next season.

Ellsbury, who hasn’t played in a game since going back on the disabled list May 28, served as DH for Boston’s rookie league entry in the Gulf Coast League on Monday and had a single in three at-bats. Manager Terry Francona said Ellsbury is scheduled to play at least half a game Tuesday in the outfield. He would not speculate how quickly Ellsbury will advance up the rehab ladder.

Other news to note:

* Mike Lowell, who had four hits Saturday and went 0-for-5 Sunday, was given a day off Monday but is expected to be back in the lineup Tuesday. Francona said it was not unreasonable to expect Lowell to be activated when the Sox return to Fenway Park on Friday. That’s assuming, of course, the Sox don’t have other plans for Lowell in light of Saturday's non-waiver trade deadline.

* Dustin Pedroia did some running before batting practice and was “disappointed,” Francona said, that his fractured foot did not feel better. Pedroia was scheduled to see Dr. Lewis Yocum before Monday night’s game.
