ARLINGTON, Texas -- Second baseman Dustin Pedroia offered red meat to the Red Sox fans distressed by the team losing three straight to the Texas Rangers this weekend to start the season 0-3 for the first time since 1996, when they lost their first five.

"I think we’re all frustrated,'' he said. "We got outplayed. It's not for lack of talent on our team. We got outpitched, we got outhit, they played better defense than us, they kicked our [butts], that’s it. Show up and play better on whatever day we play again.''

That would be Tuesday in Cleveland.

"We want to play well. We’re not excited about the way we played the first three games. They swung the bats great, they pitched good, they did everything good. We didn’t.''

The Rangers outscored the Sox 26-11 in the three-game set and outhomered the Sox 11-3. Was Pedroia shocked by the weekend?

"Not really,'' he said. "They won the American League last season. They went to the World Series. We know what type of team they have. They came out and put it on us. We’re going to have to play a lot better than that to accomplish what we all think we can do.''
