CLEVELAND -- Here is a sampling of the reaction in the Red Sox clubhouse after the club fell to 0-4 with a 3-1 loss to the Cleveland Indians.
Terry Francona: “There’s not too much to be excited about, but they’re pushing, which is good.’’
"It’s not a lot of fun. But I don’t think anyone’s going to feel sorry for us. We just have to come out and play the game right and things will work out. But if we feel sorry for ourselves, that won’t help.’’
David Ortiz: “That’s baseball, man. You just gotta keep on playing. That’s what I believe. We don’t have just games like the NFL, or 82 like the NBA, you know. We've got 162, so you can figure things out, because this is a hard game to play and you’ve got to go day by day. Tonight we need to wipe the mind off and come in with a new attitude. Everybody had a great attitude, though. Everybody’s coming down here early and getting ready to play. Things aren’t happening right now.
“Suck it up, you know. Swallow it and make sure the next time you come with dedication."
Adrian Gonzalez: "We did a really poor job of being selective and getting good pitches to hit. We’ve got to get better at that. I can only speak for myself, but today I did a really poor job.
“Two weeks from now, this will be behind everybody. It’s not something we’ll be talking about in a couple of weeks, but at the moment we’ve got to concern ourselves with it.’’
Dustin Pedroia (on scoring two run in the team's last 18 innings): “It happens. There will be times we score 29 runs in the last 18 innings. We didn’t have very many guys on today. That was tough. We’ll figure it out.
“We’re swinging at stuff out of the zone. We’re anxious. Everyone wants to do good. That’s what happens when you see a lot of checked swings, stuff like that. But we’ll settle in. Once you settle in, though, it’s going to be good. It’s going to be good stuff.’’
J.D. Drew: “It’s the start of the season. Everything’s going to be magnified. We understand it. There’s enough of a sense of urgency as far as player to player goes as well as the team. You want to get off to a good start. I’ve been through really good starts and really bad starts as a player, and you deal with those things as a team."
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who got his first hit of the season: "I felt like I’m getting there at the plate, but we’ve all got to jump in and do something at the plate, myself included. We need to get some runs. Josh pitched a great game tonight. Threw some good off-speed pitches tonight, didn’t rely on his fastball. His fastball was there when we needed it.
“We’re all pretty frustrated. We know we’re better than this. I think everyone knows we’re better than this. We’ve just to step up our game. That’s part of being the Red Sox. We know everybody’s going to step up their game up. We’ve got to do the same.’’
Carl Crawford: "We’ve been working in the cage, trying to get back to what I do, and right now I’m just off a little bit. I got to keep working on it so I get back to where I normally am.''
Josh Beckett: "I’ve got to get ahead. That’s where most of their hits occurred, when I wasn’t ahead.
"There’s too much history here. Everybody here knows how to win. We’ve got to figure it out. Nobody’s going to come out of the blue, feel sorry for us and help us out. We know what we’ve got to do."
