Crawford, Ells play in GCL; Buch works out

By John Hickey

Outfielders Carl Crawford and Jacoby Ellsbury both played for the Gulf Coast League Red Sox on Friday.

Crawford, coming back from left wrist surgery, went hitless in four plate appearances with a couple of walks and didn't have to make a throw in the field. Ellsbury, dealing with right shoulder subluxation, went 1-for-4 with an RBI double and a walk while serving as the DH.

Clay Buchholz (stomach issues) got the clearance to begin basic baseball activities back in Boston and went through a light workout Friday. Valentine said he doesn't expect Buchholz, who is eligible to come off the DL Wednesday, the final game of the road trip, to make it to the West Coast.
