Ronan to lead restructured medical staff

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- The Boston Red Sox announced the restructuring of their medical and training staffs Thursday, naming Dr. Larry Ronan as medical director. Ronan had been the team's head internist since 2005.
The Sox appointed Dan Dyrek as coordinator of sports medicine service. The team brought him on as a clinical consultant in 2012, and he has served as a physical therapist for more than 30 years. The team release made no mention of Mike Reinold, whom ESPN Boston's Gordon Edes reported earlier this week wouldn't be retained as head physical therapist and would be offered another position within the organization. Reinold had previously served as head athletic trainer in 2010-11. Rick Jameyson replaced him as head trainer in 2012, and will continue in that role next season.
"We're trying to finish off a restructuring that really started last winter and get to a system that appropriately captures the different specialties in the medical realm," said Red Sox GM Ben Cherington. "We went 60 or 70 yards down the field last winter, and now we're trying to get it in the end zone now."
The list of returning personnel includes: Pete Asnis, team orthopedist; Jim Rowe, medical operations coordinator; Masai Takahashi and Brad Pearson; assistant athletic trainers; Pat Sandora, strength and conditioning coach; Mike Boyle, strength and conditioning consultant; Russell Nua, massage therapist; Tara Mardigan, team nutritionist.
Colleague Gordon Edes first reported last week the Sox's decision to restructure the staff after the club had 27 players serve 34 DL stints -- 1,729 games missed -- in 2012.
"Many of our injuries have been of the traumatic kind, collisions on the field, that I don't think any medical person could prevent," Cherington said. "But if there's ever a situation where we're missing any time that doesn't have to be missed or if there's an injury that maybe could have been prevented, we have to look at that, too. The goals here are not to look back and sort of figure out, 'Because of this, we're doing this,' but to look forward and try to set up a structure that incorporates the best practices within those specialties with a group of people that will be fully dedicated to the players and the players will trust and they'll have the players' best interests in mind."
