Sox still waiting on Ortiz's MRI results

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- Red Sox manager John Farrell said before Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays the team is still awaiting the results of an MRI taken on the heels of designated hitter David Ortiz. The exam was performed in Fort Myers and the images were sent to be read by a specialist in Boston.
Farrell said the team will have a better plan for Ortiz once the results are determined.
"There is frustration still there with David, but until we get a definitive answer, we will put him on hold on any activity for a day," Farrell said. "The plan with him will take into account the findings or lack thereof with the MRI.
"As long as David is full aware of everything that's going on and what he's feeling and experiencing and there's no risk of additional damage to the area, then he'll be more comfortable and confident about what's ahead. It will definitely answer some of the questions that he might be in his mind right now."
* Farrell said Stephen Drew still is experiencing some symptoms from a mild concussion he suffered on Thursday after being hit by a pitch in the helmet. Drew went through a series of tests to accelerate his heart rate on Saturday and the team must wait until Major League Baseball approves his return to action.
"He still has some symptoms so he has to pass those before he is cleared by the league," Farrell said.
* Farrell said the team is close to making cuts to his roster.
"Probably in the next few days," Farrell said. "Pitching-wise, we still have a number of innings to fill. The at-bats will be a little more sparse."
With the increased workload of Mike Napoli at first base and the possible return of Ortiz, the number of plate appearances soon will dissipate.
Farrell said Napoli will get back-to-back action on Monday and Tuesday with at least three at-bats in each contest.
In addition, Shane Victorino will join the team again soon, dependent on Team USA's results in the World Baseball Classic.
