Bradley makes Opening Day roster
Let the Jackie Bradley Jr. era officially begin.
Bradley, who was among the Grapefruit League leaders in numerous offensive categories, made the Red Sox's 25-man Opening Day roster and will be in left field for Monday's season opener at Yankee Stadium, manager John Farrell said Sunday afternoon.
To make room for Bradley on the 40-man roster, infielder Mauro Gomez was designated for assignment.
The Bradley decision has been a hot topic in Red Sox camp, with the issue of service time at the center of the debate.
If Bradley stayed in the minors until April 12, he would not be able to accrue a year of major league service time this season, pushing his first possible year of free agency to after the 2019 season. Bradley's service-time clock still could be delayed if 20 or more days cumulatively in the minors over the course of the season.
Bradley finished the spring with a .419 batting average, .507 on-base percentage and .613 slugging percentage.
With Bradley in left, Jonny Gomes will be the DH on Monday, Farrell said.
The Red Sox also placed pitchers Craig Breslow (left shoulder tendinitis) and Franklin Morales (low back strain), and designated hitter David Ortiz (right Achilles tendinopathy) on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 22.
The Red Sox roster includes 12 pitchers, two catchers, six infielders and five outfielders.
PITCHERS (12): Alfredo Aceves, Andrew Bailey, Clay Buchholz, Ryan Dempster, Felix Doubront, Joel Hanrahan, John Lackey, Jon Lester, Andrew Miller, Clayton Mortensen, Junichi Tazawa, and Koji Uehara.
CATCHERS (2): David Ross and Jarrod Saltalamacchia.
INFIELDERS (6): Mike Carp, Pedro Ciriaco, Jose Iglesias, Will Middlebrooks, Mike Napoli, and Dustin Pedroia.
OUTFIELDERS (5): Jackie Bradley Jr., Jacoby Ellsbury, Jonny Gomes, Daniel Nava, and Shane Victorino.
