Mortensen activated; Beato sent down

By Kyle Brasseur

BOSTON -- Another day, another move.

After Tuesday night’s game against the Rockies, the Red Sox activated RHP Clayton Mortensen from the 15-day disabled list, optioning RHP Pedro Beato to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Mortensen was placed on the DL June 11 with a strained right groin that he suffered in an early April series against the Baltimore Orioles. He pitched four innings during his rehab with Pawtucket, allowing two runs on four hits.

Since June 8, the Red Sox have made a staggering 27 roster moves. Manager John Farrell acknowledged the recent amount of roster decisions, saying before Wednesday’s game:
“I think you try to keep the turnover at a minimum. Through that stretch there were so many things that necessitated it.”

In the past 18 days, the Red Sox have played 18 games, including two doubleheaders (June 8 against Los Angeles, June 18 against Tampa Bay).

“The pitching, by need of fresh arms, took care of itself,” Farrell said. “The depth is what gets tested.”

Beato, called up just before Tuesday’s game, pitched a scoreless inning in the contest.
