Drew out, still 'day-to-day'
By Scott Barboza
BOSTON -- Red Sox shortstop Stephen Drew is again out of the lineup for Tuesday night’s series opener against San Diego. Manager John Farrell maintains Drew is “day-to-day,” despite adding that he’s unlikely to play in the three-game series, the Red Sox’s last at home before the All-Star break.
Drew, who was has not played since Friday due to hamstring tightness in his right leg, will miss his third straight game over four days (with Monday’s off day mixed in).
Jose Iglesias again was penciled into the lineup at short, batting ninth, while Brandon Snyder will play third -- his second straight start -- and bat eighth.
“He’s improving,” Farrell said of Drew’s condition. “He was able to get out and do some running today, light jogging. He’s been responding favorably to treatment.”
Drew was lifted for a pinch runner during the fourth inning of Friday’s win over the Blue Jays after legging out a double.
Farrell said Drew’s return before the Red Sox’s 10-game West Coast swing leading into the midsummer break is “not likely,” although the manager remained mum on a potential trip to the disabled list.
“We’re hopeful of it,” Farrell said. “We’re going to continue to stay as we are with our roster situation. If there’s any delay, then we’ll adjust, but as of now that’s our approach.”
