Farrell: Buchholz won't return before break

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The latest plan for injured right-hander Clay Buchholz is for him to throw two bullpen sessions on the current 10-game West Coast road trip before making his first rehabilitation start just before the All-Star break.
Buchholz, who has been out since June 8 with discomfort in his neck and throwing shoulder, did more light throwing Friday and is expected to extend his throwing regimen to 105 feet on Saturday. Buchholz is 9-0 with a 1.71 ERA and was making a bid to start the All-Star Game before the injury.
Manager John Farrell said the coaching staff is taking their time with Buchholz because they don't want him to be limited by a pitch count when he returns and potentially tax the bullpen.
"There's some reconditioning that needs to go on here and you can't shortcut that," Farrell said.
