Hanrahan on rehab: 'I'm feeling good'

BOSTON -- Ten weeks removed from season-ending Tommy John surgery, Red Sox reliever Joel Hanrahan was in the team’s clubhouse on Tuesday to offer an update on his recovery.
“I’m feeling good,” Hanrahan said. “Everything’s looking good, feeling strong. Just doing rehab.”
Hanrahan underwent surgery on May 16, having his elbow structurally repaired as well as needing several other issues resolved. The right-hander shed some light on how his rehab has gone so far.
“I’m about six weeks out from throwing still,” Hanrahan said. “Doing a lot more working out type stuff. Light weight, little bit of range-of-motion stuff. I’ve got pretty good range right now and I’m just kind of working on that still. Just trying to get stronger.”
A free agent at the end of the season, the 31-year-old is still mulling his options for 2014. After mentioning the recent paths of fellow relievers Brian Wilson (waiting to reach full health before negotiating with teams) and Ryan Madson (signed one-year deal with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in November, still recovering), Hanrahan said that although he has a choice to make, only one thing is on his mind right now.
“My next thing that I’m thinking about is picking that ball up and throwing 5 feet,” he said.
Despite being unsure if he’ll be able to pitch come Opening Day of next season, the right-hander remains optimistic that he’ll be ready to go at some point during spring training. With a tough recovery path still ahead of him, Hanrahan mentioned a teammate of his who underwent the same procedure just two years ago as a reason for confidence.
“[John Lackey’s] kind of laid a pretty good path on the recovery of [the surgery]," he said. "I feel good right now, I haven’t had any setbacks with the rehab. Tests that they’ve done I felt good and I’m just hoping that the throwing program goes as good as the first part.”
In nine appearances with the Red Sox this season, Hanrahan converted four saves while posting an ERA of 9.82.
