Bogaerts is not Hanley

By Gordon Edes

BOSTON -- A couple of random thoughts regarding the trading deadline:

* Some people have suggested that it shouldn’t be far-fetched to think that the Red Sox would trade Xander Bogaerts, that a precedent was set when they traded another top prospect, Hanley Ramirez, to the Marlins in the Josh Beckett/Mike Lowell deal prior to the 2006 season.

Here’s the difference: While Ramirez was a gifted prospect, there were people in the organization who questioned his makeup and wondered if he would ever become the star his talent suggested. With Bogaerts, you can’t find a single person in the organization who has anything but raves for him, as a player and a person. The Sox aren’t going to trade him for a 35-year-old pitcher, or anyone else.

* With all the prospects the Sox have, some have wondered why they don’t try to put together a package for slugging Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton, who is still only 23 and won’t be eligible for free agency until 2017. Well, there is this: Asked if the Marlins could be tempted to move Stanton, one Marlins source said, “No way.’’
