Can't complain about October weather
By Joe McDonald
BOSTON -- It’s been drizzling for the better part of the evening, but both teams were able to take batting practice on the field prior to Game 1 of the ALCS.
As one Red Sox player said: “You can’t complain about the weather if you’re playing at this time of the year.”
Teams also know they’ve had a good season when there’s only one out-of-town score on the scoreboard. It feels like October baseball and the Red Sox and Detroit Tigers are ready for Game 1 of the ALCS.
On Friday, players from both teams were relaxed and enjoying the warm fall weather during their respective workouts. The opponents were interacting with each other, but it’s been all business today.
Besides the beards, Red Sox players have been sporting three shaved lines on the back of their heads, and all of them had a fresh buzz cut today.
This is the fifth ALCS for Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz. He’s received a lot of attention of late for his past postseason performances. Many Detroit players went out of their way on Friday to say hello to Big Papi.
“He’s one of the greatest players I have ever seen,” said the Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera.
On the home side, Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks believes his current teammate is a future Hall of Famer.
“In my opinion, yeah,” Middlebrooks said. “I see the work he puts in and I know how hard he works. For sure, I don’t know anyone who works harder who’s been in the league for this long.”
Ortiz went about his normal pregame routine today and even had his son by his side.
Ortiz has a .288 average with 14 homers and 50 RBIs in 70 career playoff games. He’s the Red Sox career leader in playoff runs (43), hits (66), doubles (16), home runs (14), RBIs (46), total bases (128) and walks (46).
