ANAHEIM -- In an All-Star game, he who hesitates ... gets to hear about it for months to come.

Red Sox DH David Ortiz, who stole the show Monday night by winning the Home Run Derby, grabbed some more attention Tuesday night, but this was most unwelcome.

Ortiz, who had singled to lead off the ninth, held up between first and second and was thrown out at second on what would have been a base hit by John Buck. That short-circuited a potential rally for the American League, 3-1 losers to the NL, which hadn't won since 1996.

The AL was 12-0-1 in the previous 13 All-Star Games.

All three healthy Red Sox All-Stars played. Jon Lester pitched a scoreless sixth, Ortiz went 1 for 2, and Adrian Beltre went down swinging on a 98-mile-an-hour fastball from Jonathan Broxton, also in the ninth.
