Rainy and cold at The Fort

By Joe McDonald

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The weather here on Saturday morning was horrible. It was cold, rainy and windy. Fortunately, the Red Sox were able to get all of their work in at the Player Development Complex before the downpour came just before noontime.

“It wasn’t the best day ever, but we got everything in,” said Red Sox manager Terry Francona. “Guys got their hitting in, and guys got their throwing in, so we’re OK.”

Third baseman Adrian Beltre participated in all drills on Saturday morning and said he’s fine after he twisted his ankle on Wednesday.

“We’re trying to slow him down a little bit, but he’s hard to slow down,” said Francona. “He’s doing good.”

Third baseman Mike Lowell took ground balls at first base during drills. It’s the second time this week he’s worked on the right side of the infield.

“He looked pretty good. It was pretty easy for him,” said Francona.

Pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka threw off the mound on Saturday morning, just to get a feel for throwing on an angle. He wasn’t throwing hard. The Sox have gone slow with Matsuzaka this spring.

Francona said that Matsuzaka would have an “aggressive” day on Sunday. The right-hander will play long toss at 150 feet.
