Francona: Home openers are cool
By Joe McDonald
BOSTON – It’s a safe bet the Boston Red Sox are thrilled to be back home after a 0-6 road trip through Texas and Cleveland to start the season.
When Red Sox manager Terry Francona met with the media this morning, he admitted they’ve been outplayed in every aspect of the game. Still, he said it’s good to be home.
“Home openers, for anybody who likes baseball, it’s so cool,” Francona said. “I’d be lying a little bit if I said, ‘We’re not too happy where we’re at.’ So that takes some of fun out of the pageantry. I think sometimes we have to remind ourselves that it is a long year, and it’s our responsibility to make [home opener] good and not hang our heads, pout and feel bad for ourselves.
“But things like Opening Day are more fun when you feel like you’re on a roll. I know when the planes fly over today, I’m usually thinking by then, ‘Let’s go.’ Let’s pitch, get them out and get those plans the hell out of here.”
