Poll: Is it time to give up on Dice-K?

By ESPNBoston.com

After Daisuke Matsuzaka stunk up Fenway last night (7 runs over just 2 innings of work), frustrated fans this morning are wondering whether it’s time the Red Sox look for other options at the end of the rotation.

Just two starts into his 2011 campaign, Matsuzaka has a 12.86 ERA and is a big reason why Boston’s starters’ ERA is an AL-worst 7.24 after 10 games.

But is two starts too early to give up on Matsuzaka? After all, the Red Sox do have $20 million still on the books for the Japanese righthander over the next two seasons (through 2012). Then again, it’s not as if these two starts are an aberration for Matsuzaka. Fans have been frustrated with his inconsistency for several years.

The more important question is, what other options do the Red Sox have? Tim Wakefield? Alfredo Aceves? Felix Doubront, maybe? Pedro Martinez has expressed an interest in returning to the Sox, but is a 39-year-old Pedro really what you’re looking for?

ESPN baseball analyst and former major league manager Bobby Valentine, for one, thinks it’s time the Sox call it quits on Dice-K.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t see him in a Red Sox uniform again ...,” Valentine said in the video above. “It’s just time to shake and bake and maybe break from the past and I think they’re going to do that.”

What do you think the Sox should do at the No. 5 spot in the rotation? Vote in the poll above and tune in to our new online radio show -- ESPN Boston Radio with Adam Jones -- from noon-2 p.m. today to join the debate (email your thoughts to radio@espnboston.com or call in at 508-543-4524).
