The Sox claimed the right-handed hitting Napoli off waivers, but, according to a league source, a trade was unlikely from the outset because the Angels figured to pull Napoli back. The Red Sox also may have put in the claim to block another team from acquiring Napoli.
Napoli, 28, is batting .249 with 21 homers and 60 RBIs in 113 games for the Angels this season. He has about $720,000 remaining on a one-year, $3.6 million contract.
As expected, the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim did not reach an agreement on catcher/first baseman Mike Napoli by Monday afternoon’s deadline.
