Red Sox: Seattle Mariners
Hannahan, 30, who has spent his entire season with Triple-A Tacoma, hitting .228, is expected to head to Pawtucket on Friday.
Might Jason Bay be heading home not just for the holidays, but for years to come?
Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times reports the Mariners "have made a concerted push" to land the British Columbia product and Seattle-area resident. Further, Baker writes, "I can tell you that I've heard from folks in the Seattle area that Bay [who lives in Kirkland, Wash.] has been telling people he's optimistic about signing here."
Baker notes the addition of Bay would go against the emphasis on defense shown by Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik in previous deals and that prior rumors about Seattle's possible interest in the free-agent left fielder "were usually greeted with skepticism, given his relatively poor ranking defensively" and the fact that right-handed hitters have a tougher time at Seattle's home park than lefties.
But there's no denying the Mariners could use some punch in their lineup, and Baker writes that the argument to sacrifice some defense to boost the offense "is apparently winning the Mariners over because they continue to get deeper into talks with Bay's camp."
Our Gordon Edes reported earlier this week that Bay continues to be the Red Sox's prime target to play left field next season.
Stay tuned.
M's GM doesn't sound eager to deal Hernandez
A lot was made of the Red Sox's reported attempt to land Mariners ace Felix Hernandez at the trade deadline last July, so it's no surprise his name was one of the first to come up at the general managers meetings in Chicago on Monday.
When asked by reporters about Hernandez, Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik said the 23-year-old Hernandez was a big part of his club's future.
"Felix is our property, we've got him for the next two years," Zdurienick said, according to WEEI.com. "That's about all I would say about him. I'm looking forward to seeing Felix pitch for us. We've got him for this year and next year and he's an integral part of everything we're doing. You can make an argument that he's the best guy in our league. He's certainly one of the best. I would say Top 3 anyway. Where we stand right now is that he's an integral part of what we're doing."
The Boston Globe reported over the weekend that, according to Hernandez's agent, Alan Nero, the Mariners were hoping to sign the right-hander to a long-term deal. The Globe also reported that as of Monday, the firm that represents Hernandez had not received a contract proposal but have been told there is one coming.
Hernandez was 19-5 with a 2.49 ERA for Seattle last season.
