Chara headed to Olympics

Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara was named to Slovakia's team for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver in February.

This will be Chara's second Olympic appearance. He has also skated in six World Championships and the '04 World Cup for his country. The 2009 Norris Trophy winner has posted 3-21-24 totals in 38 games for the Bruins this season. Chara's former Ottawa teammate Marian Hossa, now playing in Chicago for the Blackhawks, and New York Rangers forward Marian Gaborik were other big names selected for the club.

In '06 in Turin, Italy, the Slovaks finished in fifth place. Chara posted 1-1-2 totals in six games during those Olympics.

Team Canada will announce its roster Wednesday, with Bruins centers Patrice Bergeron and Marc Savard both possible selections. Team USA will announce on Friday during the 2010 Winter Classic. Goaltender Tim Thomas is a virtual lock to represent America.

Minor doings

While no members of the Bruins' Providence (AHL) farm club were named to the 2010 Canadian AHL All-Star Team Tuesday for next month's Time Warner Cable AHL All-Star Classic, there was some positive news for the P-Bruins Monday. Winger Yannick Riendeau was activated for the first time. Riendeau, out since the summer after shoulder surgery, led the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in scoring last winter with 126 points. He should provide a major boost for the 16-17-1-0 P-Bruins. & The Bruins were given the day off Tuesday after playing back-to-back games at Florida and Tampa Bay. They're scheduled to return to the ice Wednesday against the Atlanta Thrashers at TD Garden.
