Savard still awaiting clearance

December, 2, 2010
BOSTON -- As Marc Savard spoke to the media after an optional skate Thursday morning at TD Garden, it was clear that the Bruins center, who has not played this season due to post-concussion syndrome, is itching to be in the lineup against the Lightning tonight.

“I think at the end of the day, skating every day and after practice and stuff, it gets long and gets a little monotonous, because you’re doing the same thing,” said Savard, who also thanked the team brass, medical staff and coaches for not letting him rush back. “When I am able to play, I can’t wait. It’s going to be an exciting time.”

As of noon today, though, both Savard and head coach Claude Julien weren’t willing to call him a game-time decision because they still needed to meet with team doctors and get final clearance.

“I don’t even know if it’s that,” Savard said, when asked if he could be considered a game-time decision. “I just know that I’m meeting with them later on. We’ll see what happens.”

Julien acknowledged that there’s not much left to do for Savard except play in a game and start to get his game legs back but he too wouldn’t commit to anything.

“I think we’ve gotten as much as we can out of him,” Julien said. “He’s at that stage where he’s pretty close to having reached his max with conditioning. I don't want to get too far ahead with predicting anything before I have an answer."

When he does eventually return, whether it be tonight or Saturday at Toronto or later, Savard is looking forward to possibly playing with rookie Tyler Seguin on his wing. Savard compared Seguin’s speed to that of former teammate and linemate Phil Kessel, who is now with the Maple Leafs.

“From watching him he reminds me a lot of Phil with the speed and stuff like that,” Savard said. “That’s a guy that I can obviously take advantage of if he’s with me. It would be nice. He’s a good kid and he’s improving every day.”
