BOSTON – Bruins forward Shawn Thornton has not been medically cleared to play after receiving more than 40 stitches to close a nasty cut above his right eye after he was hit by a skate blade against the Chicago Blackhawks last Tuesday.

Thornton skated at the TD Garden early Saturday morning and the Bruins are hoping he’ll be ready to go Monday at New York.

“The swelling has started to go down a little bit, making his sight a little tougher to deal with,” said Bruins coach Claude Julien said. “Hopefully [he’ll return] next game, but right now we’re going day by day with him.”
