Rapid reaction on Boychuk signing

BOSTON -- The Boston Bruins and defenseman Johnny Boychuk agreed to a three-year contract extension, a move that helps solidify the team’s blue line for the next few seasons.

Zdeno Chara and Adam McQuaid are signed through the 2014-2015 season, Dennis Seidenberg is signed through 2013-2014 and Andrew Ference is signed through 2012-2013. Fellow blue-liner Joe Corvo will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

With Boychuk’s extension worth $3.36 per season, he becomes the second-highest-paid defenseman on the team. Chara is earning $8.5 million this season, while Seidenberg pockets $3.25 million. Ference is making $2.25 million and McQuaid is making $600,000. Corvo will earn $2.5 million this season.

Locking up Boychuk in this manner is a good move by Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli.
