Celtics can feel Nets' pain

With the New Jersey Nets dropping their 18th consecutive game Wednesday to start the 2009-10 season (and 19th in a row overall dating back to last year), it seems like a good chance for Celtics fans to take a moment to reflect on just how far this team has come since its own 18-game losing streak during the 2006-07 season.

The Celtics endured that franchise-worst skid from Jan. 7 to Feb. 11, 2006. After the final loss of the stretch -- one in which former Celtic Ricky Davis made the winning jumper in the final seconds of a 109-107 loss to the Timberwolves -- captain Paul Pierce tried to remain positive.

"You can feel it in the locker room, each loss definitely hurts," said Pierce, who missed much of the streak because of injury. "These guys are going to keep playing hard. We just need to get it out of our head."

In a season that began with the passing of Red Auerbach, the Celtics finished a dismal 24-58. Yet 17 months after the losing streak, the Celtics won their 17th NBA championship.

In the two-plus seasons since the 2006-07 campaign, the Celtics are 142-40 overall. It's unlikely the Nets -- even with visions of luring LeBron James to Jersey in the offseason dancing through their heads -- could turn it around as quickly as the Celtics did.
