Over the next few weeks, we'll take a player-by-player look at the 2009-10 roster and how each player's season unfolded, assigning a grade for their overall performance. This is the 13th in the series of report cards:

Player: Glen Davis
2009-10 averages: 6.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, 43.7 FG percentage
2009-10 salary: $3 million

Season in a paragraph: Coming off a brilliant 2009 postseason in which he filled in admirably for injured Kevin Garnett, big things were expected of Davis, but his season got derailed before it even started when an off-the-court scuffle left him with a fractured thumb. Davis later drew headlines for a desire to play in the NFL, an obscene outburst at a fan in Detroit, and numerous nickname changes. Through it all, he settled into a role as an energy player and excelled at times through the postseason.

Season highlight: (Tie) April 20, 2010 -- Filling in for suspended Garnett, Davis connected on 7-of-14 shots for a season-high 23 points with eight rebounds in a 106-77 Game 2 thrashing of the Heat in the opening round of the playoffs... June 10, 2010 -- Davis connected on 7 of 10 shots for 18 points as Doc Rivers leaned on his bench in the fourth quarter of a Game 4 triumph over the Lakers in the NBA Finals. On a night he and Robinson would be dubbed Shrek and Donkey, Davis provides a memorable season snapshot by spewing drool near midcourt while celebrating after being fouled while converting a layup.

Season lowlight: Oct. 26, 2009 -- On the eve of the 2009-10 season, Davis got into an altercation with his childhood friend while driving home from dining in Boston. The two trade punches and Davis fractures his right thumb in the process. The Celtics elect to not suspend Davis, but he misses the first 27 games recuperating. With the addition of Rasheed Wallace, it takes Davis even more time to catch up and define his role for the 2009-10 season.

Final grade: B

Teacher's notes: To call Davis' season tumultuous would be a bit of an understatement. Fortunately, by the end of the year, the focus was solely on basketball and he was a major factor in Boston's run to the Finals. It wasn't until late in the regular season that Davis established himself as an energy guy, whose hustle showed most on the offensive glass.

What's next?: Davis enters the final year of a two-year extension. A fresh start in 2010-11 could do wonders for Davis, who will once again see an increased role with Kendrick Perkins sidelined to start the season. He's thrived in those increased roles, so it will be interesting to see if he can elevate his game to another level, particularly if Rasheed Wallace retires, leaving Davis as the top big off the bench.
