FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- In the preseason, a player participating on all of the “big four” special teams units -- kickoff coverage, kick return, punt coverage and punt return -- is typically a good indication of how a player is valued by a team. Here are the players participating on either three or all four of these units Thursday night, keeping in mind that usual special teamers Kyle Arrington, Matthew Slater, and Brandon McGowan did not dress for the game.
All four units
S Sergio Brown
Three units
WR Sam Aiken
LB Marques Murrell
Meanwhile, second-year linebacker Tyrone McKenzie saw action on two top special teams units. It is a positive sign for McKenzie, who participated only on second-team special teams units last Thursday against the Rams.
