BOSTON -- Here’s Red Sox catcher Victor Martinez talking about playing catch while wearing a mitt for the first time since he fractured his left thumb in San Francisco on June 27:

"It was tight. Obviously, I was playing catch very carefully and it's still sore. I tried to squeeze the glove, but at least I was able to put the hand in the glove. It was a good thing."

How close is he to returning?

"I don't know. I can't say anything yet. It's way too [early] to be talking about time or something."

Could he squeeze the glove?

"I was able to squeeze it a little bit, but it was sore. We'll see how it feels tomorrow. We're just taking it day by day now. Definitely a lot better. That's a good thing, that it's a lot better. I'm pretty excited about it."
