OAKLAND, Calif. -- Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell received a cortisone injection in his surgically repaired right hip Monday in New York and he’s scheduled to return to Boston in preparation for a minor league rehab assignment.

He’ll play Thursday and DH for Triple-A Pawtucket at McCoy Stadium, then travel Friday with the PawSox to Columbus where he'll play Saturday and Sunday. The plan is to have him play a total of four games in six days for the PawSox.

Lowell has played only 31 games for the Red Sox this season and has a .213 average with two homers and 12 RBIs.
