SEATTLE -- Red Sox catcher Victor Martinez worked with pitcher Tim Wakefield during a bullpen session Thursday afternoon at Safeco Field.
“It’s a great step,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. “He did OK.”
Martinez, who has been on the disabled list since June 27 with a fractured left thumb, is progressing well and there’s a possibility he could be activated early next week when the club plays in Anaheim.
The switch-hitting receiver has been taking BP the last few days from both sides of the plate, but once he proves he can handle catching, he’ll return to the lineup.
“With Wake, the ball is moving all over the place and it can jam you, but it doesn’t have the velocity of the other guys, so that’ll be the next step.”
Martinez is wearing a splint that covers the tip of his thumb and he’s made modifications to his catcher’s mitt, adding more padding to protect the injury.
Martinez is scheduled to catch Clay Buchholz’s bullpen session on Saturday.
