LAS VEGAS -- Whatever happens on Saturday night, the weekend is guaranteed to be a memorable one for Freddie Roach. On Sunday, the trainer for Manny Pacquiao, Amir Khan and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., among others, will be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, N.Y.
Pacquiao has never been shy about expressing his fondness and admiration for the man he has in the past jokingly referred to as "my master." The two men, Pacquiao said this week, "are very close to each other. This man, you cannot compare him to anybody. His style is different from other trainers; that's why he is the best."
Asked whether he thought he would be entering the Hall of Fame were it not for the fighter sitting next to him, Roach expressed no doubt.
"Manny Pacquiao is the reason I'm going into the Hall of Fame," he said. "Manny Pacquiao is the reason for a lot of things, and the day he walked into my gym was the best day of my life."
