David Diaz is fighting on the undercard on Saturday night. He's looking to reclaim the title Manny Pacquiao took from him. To the non-pugilist, that task might seem complicated by the fact that Diaz and his opponent, Humberto Soto, are friends.
"You have to," he said when asked if it was easy to turn the friendship on and off. "In this line of work, you have to. We're both pretty good at doing that. There's nothing wrong with being friends and then going at it and kicking each other's ass. It's actually pretty fun. A lot of people don't understand how it is. They don't understand how we can be beating each other's brains in, and then later on going for a coke or a beer. It used to be a coke [when we were younger], and now it's a beer."
Besides, he added, there is a strong incentive.
"I never thought I'd get to be a world champion. But to be able to be called a two-time world champion? That lights a fire under my ass."
