Bills Bubble Watch: Ty Powell

7/3/2014

(Continuing a monthlong series analyzing players who are on the roster bubble and where they potentially fit in 2014.)

Name: Ty Powell

Position: Linebacker

Age: 26

2013 stats: Five games (no starts), nine tackles

Chance of making 53-man roster: 75 percent

Why he should make it: Like Nigel Bradham, Powell's roster chances will benefit from Kiko Alonso's season-ending injury. Even if he's not in the mix to start in Alonso's place -- Preston Brown and Bradham are likely the first two names up -- Powell has a strong case for a roster spot. He's considered to be among the Bills' better special-teams players and has versatility to play both inside and outside linebacker.

Why he shouldn't make it: The top four players at the position -- Keith Rivers, Brandon Spikes, Brown, and Bradham -- are basically set. After that, the competition could be wide open for reserve and special-teams roles. Seventh-round draft pick Randell Johnson will be in that mix, as will Nathan Williams, a first-year player. There are also three undrafted rookies on the roster vying for roles. It would take a strong effort from two or more of those players to push Powell off the roster, but it's a possibility.

Closest competition: Johnson, Williams, undrafted rookie
