Even though the Buffalo Bills have finished with a winning record only once since 2000, they were often considered among the NFL's best on special teams.

Under coordinators Bobby April (2004-2009) and Bruce DeHaven (2010-2012), the Bills were typically strong in the "third" phase of the game.

That wasn't the case this season.

Well-respected Dallas Morning News writer Rick Gosselin released his annual ranking of special teams units this week. The Bills ranked 31st.

It's a steep drop for the Bills, who finished eighth in Gosselin's rankings last season. The three years prior to that, they finished No. 11 (in 2011), No. 27 (in 2010) and No. 3 (in 2009).
