Bills sit starters, including Tuel, in finale

8/29/2013

The Buffalo Bills are taking on the Detroit Lions in their preseason finale Thursday night, and not surprisingly, the Bills are resting most of their starters.

Here's a look at those players not seeing action tonight, a sign that they are all essentially locks to make the 53-man roster (excluding Kevin Kolb, whose status is uncertain):

Quarterback: EJ Manuel, Kolb, Jeff Tuel

Running back: C.J. Spiller, Fred Jackson

Wide receiver: Steve Johnson, T.J. Graham, Robert Woods

Tight end: Scott Chandler

Offensive line: Cordy Glenn, Colin Brown, Eric Wood, Kraig Urbik, Erik Pears

Defensive line: Kyle Williams, Marcell Dareus, Alex Carrington

Outside linebacker: Mario Williams, Manny Lawson, Jerry Hughes

Inside linebacker: Kiko Alonso

Cornerback: Stephon Gilmore, Leodis McKelvin, Ron Brooks, Justin Rogers

Safety: Jairus Byrd, Aaron Williams

Otherwise, here is the group that is expected to see action tonight. Players not starting are in parentheses:

Quarterback: Matt Leinart, (Thad Lewis)

Running back: Tashard Choice, (Zach Brown), (Kendall Gaskins), (Drew Smith)

Fullback: Frank Summers

Wide receiver: Marquise Goodwin, Chris Hogan, (Brad Smith), (Marcus Easley), (Brandon Kaufman)

Tight end: Lee Smith, (Chris Gragg), (Dorin Dickerson), (Nick Provo)

Offensive line: Thomas Welch, Doug Legursky, David Snow, Antoine Caldwell, Sam Young, (Zebrie Sanders), (Zack Chibane)

Defensive line: Jay Ross, Alan Branch, Jarron Gilbert, (Corbin Bryant), (Torell Troup), (Izaan Cross)

Outside linebacker: Marcus Dowtin, Jamie Blatnick, (Jamaal Westerman), (Kourtnei Brown), (Keith Pough)

Inside linebacker: Nigel Bradham, Arthur Moats, (Bryan Scott), (Brian Smith)

Cornerback: Crezdon Butler, T.J. Heath, (Kip Edwards), (Nickell Robey)

Safety: Duke Williams, Jonathan Meeks, (Da'Norris Searcy), (Jordan Dangerfield)

The notables from this list? Wide receiver Marquise Goodwin, linebacker Nigel Bradham, and safety Da'Norris Searcy. Obviously, Goodwin's roster spot is a lock, but it's clear there's a separation between him and Woods. Meanwhile, it would be shocking if Bradham did not make the team, but his presence among this group is still notable.

We'll dig a little deeper into Bradham and Searcy later tonight.
