Bills Bubble Watch: Punter
By Mike Rodak
(Continuing a monthlong series analyzing players who are on the roster bubble and where they potentially fit in 2014.)
Name: Brian Moorman & Jake Dombrowski
Age: Moorman: 38; Dombrowski: 23
2013 stats: Moorman: 11 games, 61 punts, 36.6 yard net punting average; Dombrowski: out of football.
Chance of making 53-man roster: 50 percent (each)
Why Moorman should make it: It's hard to say Moorman is "old reliable," as his punting stats ranked towards the bottom of the league last season, but you know what you're getting with him. It's a good bet that he will come through in a pressure situation. Aside from a brief time after he was cut two years ago, Moorman has been a fixture with Buffalo for more than a decade. The Bills will need to find a replacement at some point, but Moorman will do for another season.
Why Dombrowski should make it: Maybe it's time for fresh blood? The Bills tried that with Shawn Powell and were burned early last season, but perhaps Dombrowski will be different. His leg looked strong this spring and he poses legitimate competition for Moorman this summer. As with any young punter, the issue could be consistency. Can Dombrowski avoid mistakes when the game is on the line? If he gives the Bills faith that he can, I don't think they will hesitate to give the Harvard grad the nod to start the season. If it doesn't work out, Moorman would simply be on speed dial.
