Lester adds depth to banged up secondary

By David Newton

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Carolina Panthers made their first move to replenish an injury-riddled secondary on Tuesday, signing safety Robert Lester from the practice squad.

The move came a day after the team learned starting free safety Charles Godfrey will miss the remainder of the season with an Achilles injury suffered in Sunday's 24-23 loss at Buffalo. Godfrey has been played on injured reserve.

Lester, 6-foot-1 and 215 pounds, was signed as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Alabama in May. He was waived during final roster cuts and re-signed to the practice squad.

How he will fit in remains to be seen as Carolina could be without three starters in the secondary on Sunday against the New York Giants. Mike Mitchell will play one safety position, likely strong, with starter Quintin Mikell questionable with an ankle injury.

D.J. Moore and Colin Jones were mentioned on Monday as candidates for the other spot. Starting left cornerback Josh Thomas (concussion) and backup Josh Norman (sprained knee) also are questionable.

Stay tuned.
