LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- In the wake of news of Jay Cutler’s return, four Chicago Bears didn’t participate in Thursday’s practice, but guard James Brown (illness) was the only unexpected non-participant. Defensive end Shea McClellin participated in a limited capacity, coming off a three-sack performance Monday night against Green Bay.

As expected, the team held out linebacker Lance Briggs (shoulder), long-snapper Patrick Mannelly (calf) and defensive tackle Jay Ratliff (groin). Briggs, Mannelly and Ratliff aren’t expected to play Sunday at Soldier Field against the Detroit Lions.

Briggs appears to be another week or two away from returning to action, as is Ratliff, who recently signed with the Bears. Coach Marc Trestman described Mannelly’s timetable for return Wednesday as “week to week.”

Ratliff, meanwhile, is expected to return in the coming weeks to shore up Chicago’s injury-ravaged defensive line. Trestman said he “wouldn’t expect [Ratliff] this weekend, and it will be day to day and see how it goes.”

“We are optimistic that down the road he can help us,” the coach added. “I talked to him for a brief minute when he was here visiting with us, and we’ll see where he is physically as we move through the next few weeks.”

Linebacker Blake Costanzo (back), Cutler (groin), tight end Dante Rosario (ankle) and cornerback Charles Tillman (knee) participated fully.

For the Lioins, defensive end Ezekiel Ansah (ankle) was held out of practice, along with cornerback Bill Bentley (knee) and offensive tackle Corey Hilliard (knee). Receiver Nate Burleson (forearm) was limited, along with safety Louis Delmas (knee), receiver Calvin Johnson (knee) and safety Glover Quin (ankle). Linebacker Travis Lewis (ankle) participated fully.
