Devin Hester didn't catch any passes in the Chicago Bears' 10-3 win over the Buffalo Bills on Saturday, but he continues to catch the praise of teammates and coaches for his development as a receiver in training camp.

"He's just come out flying," backup quarterback Caleb Hanie said Monday on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. "We all know he's got speed and he's quick and he can make amazing plays and make guys miss and take it to the house on any given down any time he gets the ball, but … being where you need to be and not second guessing your release or knowing whether you're going first on a switch release or going second, that's the stuff Devin fought through last season.

"This year, he's really been on point. He's hit the ground running from where he left off. He's been one of Jay [Cutler's] favorite targets in practice. So we're real impressed with him and I've heard nothing but good things from [receivers coach] Darryl Drake and [offensive coordinator Mike] Martz about his improvement and development."

Bears receivers coach Darryl Drake was not happy with a story that suggested Johnny Knox might request a trade if he doesn't regain his starting status, and Drake ripped into reporters.

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. -- Chicago Bears receivers coach Darryl Drake was involved in a heated conversation with three media members outside the dining hall on the campus of Olivet Nazarene University on Thursday.

"Johnny Knox never said one word [about being traded]," Drake said while refuting a published article. "Nothing ever came out of his mouth. Johnny Knox texted me this morning wondering where this [expletive] comes from. I'm going to tell you right now, if you guys keep making stuff up and bringing this stuff up, you're going to deal with me. That ain't going to be real nice. That ain't going to be real positive.

"Johnny Knox is trying to do everything he needs to do. He don't need all this. He's trying to be the best he can possibly be. If Johnny Knox would have said [I want to leave] that, fine, he'd have to deal with it. But when he didn't, I'm going to have to get involved with it. It's as simple as that."

A day earlier, Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz explained the reasoning behind the club's decision to drop Knox on the depth chart below Roy Williams.

"Johnny's very talented," Martz said. "He's very young, and he's still learning how to play. Guys like Johnny have just got to learn to be consistent. The consistency in his play, and that's with all young players really at any position, particularly at that X position, which is kind of that position of the wide receiver.

"So he certainly has the ability. He just is still learning to play and adjust and do the things that we ask him to do."

Drake was pressed by a reporter to expound on Martz's statement, a request that was met with a fair amount of resistance from the veteran coach.

"I didn't read Martz's comments, I have to read them for myself," Drake said. "I don't care what he said, I have to read them for myself and then I might say something about it. I will read it for myself."

The reporter refused to back down, which caused the situation to escalate.

"Don't you [expletive] tell me what I need to say or what I don't need to say," Drake. "I'm [upset] because [people are saying things] that aren't true. I don't give a [expletive] what he [Martz] said. Alright then ... you don't tell me what he said.

"I'll read it myself and then I'll expound on it."

Michael Irvin joined "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000 to discuss why Roy Williams has been upset with him, and what impact Williams might have on the Bears. Williams also discussed what Bears fans can expect from Sam Hurd.
