Mike Singletary: Chicago Bears will always be team I love

November, 10, 2009

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Mike Singletary is doing his best to limit the distractions of having to face his former team -- something the San Francisco 49ers coach admits he had a difficult time doing in the past.

"The Bears will always be a team that I love," Singletary said Tuesday during a conference call with Chicago media members. "[I have] so many friends, family, memories, that goes without saying. The first time I played the Bears when I first got to San Francisco [2005], coming to Soldier Field and being in all the excitement was a bit overwhelming.

"I'm glad this is not the first time I'm playing the Bears, because that would be tough. I played them a couple of times, so now it's just a matter of going out there and competing against a good football team."

Just like Lovie Smith, Singletary is at a crossroads with his 49ers team. After a fast 3-1 start, they have lost four straight, including a 34-27 decision to a struggling Tennessee team on Sunday.

"Sometimes you go through growing pains, [and] have to deal with some of the setbacks," Singletary said. "The most important thing is how you respond, and we will respond positively going forward."
